Single-photon image sensor

Nature Photonics journal cover featuring a stylized photonic circuit pattern in glowing red, orange, and gold tones, illustrating a single-photon image sensor.

This cover of Nature Photonics (April 2017, Volume 11, Issue 4) features a striking abstract visualization of integrated photonic circuitry rendered in warm red, orange, and gold tones.

The artwork was done for Professor Karl Berggren of the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The layered, waveguide-like forms evoke the flow and manipulation of light at the nanoscale, aligning with the issue’s focus on single-photon image sensors, biomedical imaging, terahertz photonics, and mid-infrared optics. The image communicates the intersection of optical engineering, nanofabrication, and advanced imaging technologies, using a schematic-inspired aesthetic that reflects contemporary photonics research and device architecture.
